Ruth Ellis

"Ruth Ellis, a coloratura soprano I directed in the U.S. premiere of Alexander Goehr's Triptych... gave a detailed and moving performance as a mad boy, physically expressive and precise notwithstanding the fact that she was rigged by Foy for a complicated flying route and singing (faultlessly) a murderous coloratura showpiece. In those perilous moments ruth showed a rare ability to integrate physical, intellectual, vocal and emotional priorities in a coherent, affecting performance. I honestly cannot think of any singer alive who could have done this part better. Ruth... is a very serious artist. Moreover she is a wonderful actress, emotionally available and deeply giving, and those qualities apply to her as a friend and colleague. I recommend her with respect and gratitude for what she hs given to me."
