NYLA STAR
Tell us about your background ' were you always interested in jewelry design? How did you develop a love for it? Leslie: I've loved jewelry for as long as I can remember. I'm Indian so I grew up wearing a wrist full of bangles and had my ears pierced when I was three. I became interested in the design aspect after I worked for a jewelry company right after college. When did you launch your company? What was your first piece? Leslie: NYLA STAR launched in early 2010 when I was living in Brooklyn, NY. My first piece was my 'Samantha'? necklace. It's a style inspired by one of my good friends, Samantha. I've since designed an entire Samantha collection and it's a best seller because of its simplicity and functionality. Everyone loves it. What inspires your work? Leslie: Everything really. Friends, family, fashion, travel and even food. I was at Laduree in SoHo the other day and was thinking how cute a French macaroon locket necklace and little stud earrings would be. My last trip to Paris inspired the line's Rue necklaces. They're street sign replicas of my three favorite Parisian streets ' Avenue Des Champs Elysees, Rue Royale and Rue St. Honore. Customers love them and ask me all the time to make street signs from other cities. It's on my radar..I'm open to suggestions! How would you describe your line? Leslie: Sophisticated, elegant, fun, versatile and affordable. My customers love the line for various reasons, but I think these are the main ones. How do you approach the process of creating a new line each season? Leslie: All year I take notes and make inspiration boards of interesting things, but my bottom line is always to design a collection that can be worn with the previous collection. It's important that my customers can mix and match their NYLA STAR pieces. This is primarily why I shy away from too much color. Clear stones go with everything. What does the name, NYLA STAR represent to you and your company? Leslie: NYLA STAR represents a woman who gets it. She gets fashion and has fun with it. She can wear a $30 top and pair it with $500 shoes and doesn't care about the label, but instead how it looks. Also, not a lot of people know this, but NYLA is the first initials of myself, my two sisters and my mother and STAR is my mother's maiden name. What's your favorite piece right now? Leslie: Right now it's the Madge bracelet. I wear it every day on the same wrist as my watch. I love the shape and the bezel set. What jewelry trends do you foresee for spring? Leslie: Rose gold is maintaining popularity, and I think it's here to stay. Jewelers may also play with the Pantone color of the year, Radiant Orchid. Otherwise, my 'trend'? is to always keep it simple.
